Tuesday 20th April it was announced that The University of Worcester had been selected as one of four Universities to become part of the newly formed premier league for British Wheelchair Basketball. As the former home of British Wheelchair Basketball we are delighted to have the opportunity to be the home of a team that will compete in the first professional para-sport league in the UK. Coach Dean had this to say on the announcement “It’s great for the University and the Worcester Wolves to have the honour to be a part of something ground breaking. For para-sport on a whole it’s ground breaking! Whilst this is the first professional para-sport league, I hope it’s not too long before we see the second, third and fourth etc.” This will hopefully allow us to compete in Wheelchair Basketball at University level too, which we haven’t done since we were ‘Crowned Victors of the British Universities Wheelchair Basketball Championships‘ back in March 2016
A long with team success at Wheelchair Basketball, there has also been individual success. Three former students represented Great Britain in Women’s Wheelchair Basketball at the Rio Paralympic Games in 2016. We hope having the professional team here will springboard a resurgence of wheelchair Basketball here and help to develop another cohort of Paralympians
